The Federated States of Micronesia Joins Global Pledge to Reduce 2020 Methane Levels by 30% by 2030

PALIKIR, Pohnpei—His Excellency David W. Panuelo, President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), has committed the FSM to the Global Methane Pledge; the pledge seeks a 30% reduction from 2020 methane levels by 2030.

In a letter written to the Honorable John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, President Panuelo said “This ambitious goal, when coupled with mitigation of other short-lived climate pollutants, can significantly slow down the warming of the Planet, and will help protect vulnerable island countries from the many Climate impacts that threaten our existence.”

The FSM believes that focused and determined action on short-lived climate pollutants, and protection of carbon sinks, are critically important as the World buys time to allow major, long-term decarbonization to take effect. “It is for this reason,” President Panuelo wrote, “and in support of the leadership President Biden is showing on Climate Change, that I express the willingness of the FSM to join the Global Methane Pledge by adding our name to the list of supporting countries.”
