CANBERRA, Australia — March 23, 2026 — His Excellency Wesley W. Simina, President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), arrived in Canberra, where he and his delegation were formally welcomed with a traditional Smoking Ceremony led by Ngunnawal Elder Aunty Serena-Palm.
The ceremony took place at Mount Ainslie Lookout, a site of cultural and natural significance, and served as an acknowledgment of the Ngunnawal people as the Traditional Custodians of the land. The Smoking Ceremony is a customary practice that offers both physical and spiritual cleansing and is often performed to welcome visitors.
“I am truly honored to experience this important tradition,” President Simina said. “This ceremony reflects the deep spiritual connection of the Ngunnawal people to their land. We are grateful to share in this meaningful moment.”
