Yap State constitutes one of the four constituent states comprising the Federated States of Micronesia, together with Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Kosrae. Positioned as the farthest western island in the FSM, Yap is situated roughly midway between Guam and Palau.
The territorial expanse of Yap encompasses the principal islands of Yap, Gagil, Tomil, and Rumung. Extending eastwards, the Yap State reaches over approximately 1,200 kilometers, encompassing an additional 134 outer islands, the majority of which are low-lying atolls.

Municipal Governments
Yap State is fragmented into 21 municipalities, each characterized by multiple village units that have been established based on traditional customs and historical boundaries. These municipalities are categorized into five primary island clusters: Rumung, Maap, Gagil-Tamil, Marbaa’, and the Neighboring Islands. The initial four groupings constitute what is known as Yap Proper.
