CANBERRA, Australia — March 25, 2026 — During his high-level visit to Australia, His Excellency Wesley W. Simina, President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), met with the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, at Parliament House.
The meeting built on the strong momentum of engagements throughout the visit, providing an opportunity for both leaders to advance discussions on key areas of cooperation and shared regional priorities.
President Simina expressed the FSM’s deep appreciation for Australia’s strong partnership and support across critical sectors. Noting the recent dedication of the FSM’s embassy in Canberra he officiated. President Simina also thanked Prime Minister Albanese for the support of his government in facilitating this milestone following 39 years of diplomatic relations. The establishment of the FSM’s embassy in Australia serves as a reflection of the growing partnership between the two countries and the broader Pacific family.
Discussions also covered opportunities to strengthen cooperation in energy security, noting that energy remains a prominent issue for Australia, as it is for the FSM. President Simina further conveyed the FSM’s interest in exploring practical arrangements with Australia to address shared challenges in this area.
President Simina reaffirmed the FSM’s commitment to the Ocean of Peace Declaration amid ongoing global tensions and expressed support for Australia’s upcoming candidacy to the United Nations Security Council.
On climate cooperation, President Simina welcomed Australia’s leadership role in COP31 and its efforts to ensure Pacific priorities are central to the negotiations, as well as its engagement in the lead-up to COP31, indicating the FSM’s intention to participate in upcoming high-level engagements. Both leaders also discussed regional priorities, including the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressing interest in visiting the FSM.
