Secretary Cantero Receives Courtesy Call from Ambassador of Japan

Palikir, Pohnpei — June 23, 2026 On June 17, 2026, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ricky F. Cantero received a courtesy call from His Excellency Nobuo Kagomiya, Ambassador of Japan to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss a range of bilateral and regional matters of mutual interest and reaffirm the longstanding friendship and strong partnership between the FSM and Japan.

During the discussion, both sides exchanged views on upcoming regional engagements, including the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in Palau and Japan’s hosting of the 11th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM 11) in 2027. They also discussed President Wesley W. Simina’s anticipated official working visit to Japan in October 2026 and underscored the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration in advancing shared priorities and strengthening bilateral relations.

The meeting highlighted ongoing cooperation in areas such as climate resilience, disaster preparedness, water security, maritime affairs, infrastructure development, transportation, and capacity building. Secretary Cantero welcomed Japan’s continued support, including efforts undertaken in collaboration with international partners to strengthen preparedness for climate-related challenges, including anticipated El Niño conditions, and to enhance community resilience throughout the FSM. In this regard, Secretary Cantero expressed appreciation for Japan’s timely assistance to Chuuk State following the impact of Typhoon Sinlaku.

The two sides also discussed transportation and connectivity, including plans for a new passenger-cargo vessel for the FSM, and noted the progress being made on the Pohnpei Port Expansion Project.

Secretary Cantero expressed appreciation for Japan’s longstanding support and valuable contributions to the FSM’s development efforts and reaffirmed the FSM’s commitment to maintaining close cooperation and further strengthening the friendship and Kizuna between the two countries.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to continued partnership and cooperation in support of shared regional and development priorities.
