Ambassador Akillino H. Susaia Accredited as the Federated States of Micronesia’s First Ambassador to the European Union

BRUSSELS, Belgium – October 16, 2025 — His Excellency Akillino H. Susaia presented the official copies of his Appointment as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federated States of Micronesia to the European Union (EU) to the Deputy Chief of Protocol for the European Union.

Ambassador Susaia’s accreditation to the European Union (EU) is in support of H.E. President Wesley Simina`s vision to expand FSM’s global diplomatic presence. Ambassador Susaia will now serve as FSM’s first Ambassador to the European Union based in Geneva, Switzerland.

During the discussions with the Deputy Chief of Protocol, Ambassador Susaia expressed appreciation for the opportunity to initiate and confirm his Credentials to the EU’s leadership and looks forward to the opportunity to officially meet with the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Parliament. Ambassador Susaia also noted the ongoing work between the FSM Government and the EU to operationalize FSM and the EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) to deepen economic integration and promote development and mutual trade. Furthermore, a discussion was held on the Embassy’s role in the process and procedure on accessing EU technical and development assistance. It was agreed that the FSM Embassy in Geneva will serve as the coordination point between the European Union and the FSM.

Following the meeting with Deputy Chief of Protocol, on Friday, October 17, 2025, Ambassador Susaia met with Ms. Pavlina Nikolova, Deputy Head of Unit DG Mare and Ms. Aurélie Buthod-Garcon. This is the Unit responsible for ensuring compliance with EU’s Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fisheries regulations. The meeting was a follow up on FSM`s pending application to export tuna fish products into the EU member countries markets through the FSM Competent Authority (CA). Ambassador Susaia informed Deputy Head Nikolova that the FSM Embassy in Geneva will continue to coordinate with relevant officials in the FSM capital on the remaining tasks needed in order to complete EU’s review of FSM’s CA application.
