Ambassador Soram Testifying Before the House Natural Resources Subcommittee

On January 14, 2026, Ambassador Jackson T. Soram of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) testified before the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs, underscoring the importance of the Compact of Free Association Amendments Act of 2024 Implementation. Testifying alongside him were Ambassador Charles Paul, Ambassador of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to the United States, and Ambassador Hersey Kyota, Ambassador of the Republic of Palau to the United States, who also addressed the implementation of their respective Compact agreements.

Ambassador Soram highlighted the Act’s extension of the U.S.–FSM partnership for another 20 years, restoration of federal benefits for FSM citizens, and renewed investments in health, education, and infrastructure. He emphasized the urgent need to improve access to VA healthcare for FSM veterans, who serve at one of the highest per‑capita rates in the U.S. military. Ambassador Soram also voiced strong support for the return of the Peace Corps program, citing its historic role in strengthening cultural and economic ties.
