PALIKIR, Pohnpei — March 20, 2026 — His Excellency Wesley W. Simina, President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), has issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring a period of national mourning in honor of the late former Speaker Nelson Pelep.
In recognition of his decades of distinguished public service, the national flag of the FSM will be flown at half-mast for three consecutive days, beginning today.
Former Speaker Pelep was the longest-serving senator in the history of the Pohnpei State Legislature and played a significant role in the development and advancement of Pohnpei State. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to public service have left a lasting impact on the people he served.
His passing marks the loss of a respected leader and statesman.
The Government and people of the Federated States of Micronesia honor his memory and extend their deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and the people of Pohnpei State.
