President Simina Receives Credentials of the Ambassador of Türkiye to the FSM

PALIKIR, Pohnpei — February 7, 2026 — President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), His Excellency Wesley W. Simina, received the Letters of Credence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to the FSM, H.E. Oğuzhan Ertuğrul, during a formal ceremony held on February 6, 2026, at the President’s Office in Palikir.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President the Honorable Aren B. Palik, members of the President’s Cabinet, and representatives of the diplomatic corps.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Ertuğrul formally presented his Letters of Credence to President Simina. Following the presentation, President Simina welcomed the Ambassador and delivered remarks reaffirming the FSM’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Türkiye. Ambassador Ertuğrul also delivered a statement conveying warm greetings from the President of Türkiye and highlighting four key areas of shared interest: climate change, environmental protection, energy security, and food security.

Following the presentation of credentials, President Simina held a courtesy meeting with Ambassador Ertuğrul, during which both sides reaffirmed the friendly and steadily growing relations between the FSM and Türkiye. The Ambassador emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations with FSM since the establishment of diplomatic ties.

Discussions during the courtesy meeting focused on shared priorities and areas of cooperation, particularly in addressing global challenges such as climate change, environmental protection, energy security, and food security, which require strong international cooperation. Ambassador Ertuğrul highlighted Türkiye’s preparations to host COP31, underscoring the importance of achieving practical and results-oriented outcomes to accelerate global climate action.

The meeting also addressed cooperation in trade, tourism, and infrastructure development, including the exchange of best practices to support tourism growth and the importance of aviation cooperation as a foundational element for expanding tourism. Ambassador Ertuğrul indicated that Türkiye is prepared to consider priority infrastructure proposals from FSM for possible engagement by Turkish companies and referenced previously proposed instruments on civil aviation cooperation, expressing Türkiye’s readiness to continue discussions.

On multilateral cooperation, both sides discussed continued engagement within the United Nations system. President Simina also sought Türkiye’s support for the FSM’s ONE UN House initiative, which aims to strengthen the United Nations presence and coordination in the North Pacific. President Simina reaffirmed FSM’s commitment to the UN system and expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation of international partners. Both sides further expressed their shared commitment to continued cooperation in the lead-up to COP31, with President Simina noting the FSM’s interest in engaging closely at the Pre-COP meeting to be held in the Pacific region (location to be announced), with Australia serving as President of Negotiations.

The possibility of establishing Honorary Consuls of Türkiye in the FSM and the FSM in Türkiye was also discussed as a means to further facilitate bilateral engagement.

President Simina expressed appreciation for the Ambassador’s visit and reiterated the FSM’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Türkiye through continued dialogue and cooperation, both bilaterally and within regional and multilateral forums.
