PALIKIR, Pohnpei — July 20, 2026 — His Excellency Wesley W. Simina, President of the Federated States of Micronesia, received the credentials of His Excellency Archbishop Gábor Pintér, Apostolic Nuncio to the Federated States of Micronesia, during a formal ceremony held at the Office of the President on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
The presentation of credentials formally accredited Archbishop Pintér as the representative of the Holy See to the Federated States of Micronesia. Appointed by Pope Francis in January 2025, he is the fifth Apostolic Nuncio accredited to the FSM with residency in New Zealand.
During the ceremony, President Simina and Archbishop Pintér delivered remarks reflecting on the longstanding and cordial relationship between the FSM and the Holy See and expressed confidence in its continued growth.
President Simina conveyed his appreciation for the Holy See’s moral leadership in promoting peaceful dialogue, conflict resolution, and international cooperation. He also acknowledged the Catholic Church’s longstanding contributions to education in the FSM, including the important role of Catholic schools in educating generations of Micronesians and preparing leaders, professionals, and citizens who continue to serve the nation.
Archbishop Pintér expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended to him and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening engagement between the Holy See and the FSM. He also conveyed his readiness to support the nation and encouraged continued communication on areas where his assistance could be beneficial.
Following the ceremony, President Simina and Vice President Palik received Archbishop Pintér for a courtesy call. Their discussions emphasized the importance of sustained dialogue, closer diplomatic engagement, and continued cooperation between the FSM and the Holy See.
The Federated States of Micronesia and the Holy See established diplomatic relations in 1994 and have since maintained cordial relations founded on mutual respect and continued diplomatic engagement.
Archbishop Pintér was accompanied by Monsignor Tomasz Gdula, Deputy Head of Mission; the Most Reverend Julio Angkel, Bishop of the Diocese of the Caroline Islands; Father Kelly Yalmadau, Vicar General; Father Augustine Barnabas, Episcopal Vicar of Pohnpei and Kosrae; and Father Jove Thompsin.
The FSM Government looks forward to working closely with Archbishop Pintér and the Holy See to deepen their longstanding relationship and advance areas of shared interest.
